Monday Night Homework

1. Review your old essays from this quarter and find at least one grammar correction that you don't understand very well. Write the mistake in an email and send it to me to review in class tomorrow.
2. Make a list of your most common errors that you need to check. You will be able to use this list during your final test.

Weekend Homework and Tentative Schedule for Week 10

Read the other model Process Essays pages 119-121. Decide which organizational pattern is used.

Go to a park, cafe, or some busy public place and fill out the planning photocopy. Then write a one page descriptive paragraph of that place. Use narrative (first person style: I see . . . )

Week 10 Schedule:
Monday: share and edit descriptive paragraphs, look at more process essay models.
Tuesday: Work on noun clauses, causative verbs, -ing and other common errors.
Wednesday: Final Writing Test. This is worth 20% of your grade! Don't miss it!!!
Thursday: Writing letters, email etc. Final Draft of compare and contrast essay is due.
Friday: no formal class, I will be available to any questions you have. Graduation party 3 pm.

1. Check your Hometown blog (from last week) for grammar errors!!! I found a lot of mistakes with who, which, where when.




2. Read two other people's blogs and write a comment.




3. SkillsBank Writing: Language Mechanics 8, 9, 10 if you haven't already done them. then try Quiz 2 5-10.




4. Do the online exercises: Relative pronouns, more practice, this one is harder even more ,try reduced adjectives clauses (Thursday's Lesson) OR try any of these exercises Scroll down to the Adjective and adverb clause section.




5. You can also do some more UUEG Chapter 13 exercises. Exercises 13 15, 17 and 27 are good review practice for WHOSE, WHERE and WHEN




6. New Blog for this week: Describe a favorite toy, childhood memory, or find and interesting picture from the internet to describe using who, which, that, whose, where. try reducing some of the adjective clauses. (Please post by Sunday)




7. Start typing your compare and contrast essay. (Due Wednesday )

Homework & Grammar Test on Monday

1. Study for your Grammar Test on Monday. It will cover: adverb clauses p.41 (because, if, when, although etc, transition words p.58 (Therefore, however, In addition etc) & Fragments p. 82-82, Run ons p.92-93, and Comma Splice errors p. 104-105.
   


2. Complete your outline for your "How to Deal with Stress" essay. You should have topic sentences for each body paragraph and notes about details and examples. If you can not think of details, try to make your paragraphs a bit broader. Instead of "Talking to friends" say "Talking to People" and write about friends and parents.

This is an in class essay. You must have:

• an introduction with a clear thesis statement


• separate body paragraphs with transitions, topic sentences, supporting sentences with examples and/or details


• a short conclusion that restates the main idea.

Read the model paragraph and essay on pages 50-53. Think about which paragraph you would like to expand into an essay. You can choose from the three paragraphs we have already written, A Holiday in My Country, A famous Place or Person, or the in class writing test.

1. Photocopy pages 212-214 (first three pages).


2. Work on your blog if you want. It needs to be done by Friday. The topic is: A frightening (scary experience. You must use subordinators: when, while, before, after, since, because, although, until, if, as, whenever, wherever etc.


3. If you had trouble on the grammar test and got less than 75 %, please review your incorrect answers and write new sentences in the same verb tense (or passive voice) I will give you half credit.
