Gun Ownership

The Second Amendment gives Americans the right to keep and bear arms, guns. The intent of this law was that citizens could protect themselves and fight if their government had become too oppressive. This was a valid concern at the time immediately after the American Revolution when the constitution was written. Even today many Americans still feel that they need to own guns to protect their homes and families. However, in my opinion, gun ownership should be banned because the dangers far outweigh the benefits.
First of all, citizens could not possibly defeat the modern U.S. army with any guns that are available, so they are not useful to fight against the government. Technology has greatly changed in the past 225 years. The modern military has tanks, airplanes, rocket launchers and weapons that would easily defeat any “armed” citizen. Both Waco, Texas and Ruby Ridge, Idaho serve as frightening examples of what actually happens when radical groups try to rebel against the US authorities. In both cases, nearly all the armed citizens were killed along with their families because they insisted on fighting the U.S. government to the end.
Another reason why guns should be banned is that they are too easily passed into the hands of criminals. Although a background check and permit are required to obtain a gun, criminals, gang members, and even teenagers can easily steal guns or buy them on the black market. If all guns were banned anyone possessing a gun could be automatically arrested and their gun confiscated. It would make it much easier to police to charge criminals if all guns were illegal.
Finally, guns should be outlawed because they often end up hurting the very people who own them. Just recently a boy took his father’s gun to school. It accidently went off and injured a little girl in the boy’s class. Now the boy is in juvenile jail and his life is changed forever. His family is not only facing criminal charges but also lawsuits from the girl’s family. In addition, gun owners often end up killing family members in a moment of passion or anger because having a gun made it so easy. The last and saddest fact is that gun owners often use their own guns to commit suicide, again because it is so easy.

In conclusion, given the dangers that guns present, there is no reason why the average citizen in the U.S needs to own a weapon. Although it may take a while to collect all firearms for lawful owners and perhaps longer from criminals, banning guns and ammunition today is the first step. That way we can all look forward to a safer future.

The King of Pop
By Flora

Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, is the person I admire. In my view, he is a great musician, He created a lot of famous songs like Man in the Mirror, Bad, Remember the Time and so on. He also broke with tradition and created his own style. Actually you notice the words of a song, you will find that some of that some words are against racial discrimination, such as Black or White. However, he not only focused on music but also was good at dancing. the Moon Walk is so popular that many people are learning is still now. Finally, Michael Jackson was a philanthropist. He invited diseased children to visit his house and even built a playfield for them. He cared about disabled people and human's environment. Michael was full of compassion. Nevertheless, he endured tons of insults for his skin color and plastic surgery. Although he died with so many slurs, I admire him. Michael Jackson will live in my heart forever!
